Armenia
The Republic of Armenia (Hayastany Hanrapetutyun), is a state in the southern Caucasus. Area: 29,800 sq. km. Population: 3 million (2004). The official language is Armenian. Capital: Yerevan. Major cities: Gyumri, Kirovakan. The country has 11 regions (Masri), including city of Yerevan. Head of State: President. Legislature: National Assembly.
Armenia is a mountainous country, it occupies the northeastern part of the Armenian plateau (highest point Mount Aragats, 4090 m). Frequent earthquakes shake the country (1988 Spitak quake was particularly devastating). Armenia is situated in the subtropical zone. Sub-alpine and alpine meadows.
The climate is mainly continental and dry. The biggest river Arax (with the influx of Razdan). Sevan is the largest and most beautiful lake. The country has a number of reserves, such as Dilijan and Khosrov reserves, and the Sevan Lake National Park. There are numerous mineral springs resorts: Arzni, Jermuk, Dilijan Tsaghkadzor etc.
Armenia is known as the world's first Christian country. Located on the way from Asia to Europe, in the Caucasus region, it has a rich ancient culture. Hospitality of the local people makes Armenia a welcoming country to experience. Armenia has the largest lake in the Lesser Caucasus mountain range, Lake Sevan, and its climate is grossly determined by the mountains. Armenia's prime attractions are monasteries and churches. Countless religious sites are built in the places of immense natural beauty and impress the visitors with incredible landscapes.
