Mexico City Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the largest city in Northern and Southern America, the third biggest metropolitan area in the world according to its population. Mexico City is the most important political, cultural and economic center of the country. Mexico City is known for its huge size and even bigger pollution, but travelers who come to the city are usually rewarded with astonishing sights. Mexico City hosts over 160 wonderful museums, numerous archaeological masterpieces and historical places, 100 art galleries and more than 30 concert halls to make one's visit exciting. It is often considered to be a Mecca of classical and orchestra music. It is also the third city in the world according to the number of theaters after London and New York. The main square of Mexico City is the Plaza de la Constitucion. Also known as Zocalo, it is the second largest square in the world after Moscow's Red Square. The square is only decorated with a huge Mexican flag in the middle of it. It is considered to be the heart of the city, the place of numerous events, concerts, and festivals, as well as the starting point of a city tour. The most recognizable icon of Mexico City is the golden Angel of Independence, found on the wide avenue Paseo de la Reforma. The tremendous Metropolitan Cathedral to the north from the central square had a long period of construction - over 250 years. It is thus marked by a combination of architectural styles. The massive character of the building accelerates its sinking into the ground. This process happens with other downtown buildings in Mexico City, and the only thing the authorities can do is to ensure the whole construction is sinking uniformly. The National Palace government building is in the eastern part of the downtown area is home to the state treasury and archives. Diego Rivera's murals presented here depict Mexican history. The Great Temple is the site of important archaeological findings. There was a large round stone excavated here which depicted the Aztec moon goddess. Evidently, it was the main Aztec temple devoted to the gods of war and of rain. In the museum one can see an amazing scale model of the ancient city and numerous artifacts. Palazio de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Palace) is a massive theater planned to mark the anniversary of Mexican independence. It was completed in 1934 and decorated with the murals by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and Jose Clemente Orozco. National Anthropology Museum contains the most astonishing collection of artifacts from Central America in the world. Its halls and detailed ethnological exhibits will allow the tourists to spend a full day here with the exhibition of the famous Aztec Sun Stone. The so-called floating gardens of the Aztecs are another magnificent romantic place to visit. One can take a brightly colored boat and travel along the canals to this wonderful agricultural venue. The Casa Azul (Blue House) was the family residence of the famous artist decorated with Mexican arts and crafts. The famous archaeological site Teotihuacan outside the city of Mexico is known as the "city of the gods", a huge ancient urban center. Here one can see the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, stroll along the Avenue of the Dead, ascend the Pyramids of the Sun of the Moon. The most visited religious place in the country is Basilica de Guadalupe, the hill where the patroness of Mexico, the virgin of Guadalupe, appeared to Juan Diego according to the legend. With all the venues to name, Mexico City is a universal tourist destination with a number of sights to everyone's taste.
