Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's main attraction. The city is truly amazing with its endless beaches neighbouring with the modern city districts, the monuments of colonial architecture and skyscrapers, or the tropical forest located just some miles away from downtown. The city's history goes back to the 16th century when the newly arranged settlement was called "Rio" which meant "river". In 1872, Rio de Janeiro already had 250,000 inhabitants and became an important center of the Portuguese-speaking world. Rio is not the capital, but it is the heart of the country: it houses offices of many businesses as well as the first airport in Latin America. Many tourists come here to see the "City of Wonders" on the ocean.

The main attraction of the city is the 30-meter high statue of Christ the Savior on the summit of Mount Corcovado. The monument was designed to commemorate Brazil's celebrating the centenary of its independence. The architect represented Christ with stretched arms embracing the entire city. The observation platform which is arranged here gives the visitors a chance to see the beauty of Rio from the monument.

The central area of the city is its historical part. Here is the residence of the Portuguese rulers, known as Paco Imperial. After the fall of monarchy, the palace was used as a store, bank, and the post office. The city center is rich in interesting churches. At the site of the cathedral of La Candelaria there was a 16th-century temple built by a sailor who had vowed to erect a church if he had been saved during a storm. The Cathedral is known for its stained glass windows, chapels, arches and murals. Another interesting monument is the Duomo. This modern building has an original architectural appearance. It looks like a block of reinforced concrete, enveloped in scaffolding.

Southern districts of Rio are famous for their beaches. Among them one cannot but mention Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. The total length of the city's beaches is about 90 km. Copacabana Beach has become a symbol of Rio de Janeiro. In the north of Rio de Janeiro there is the Stadium Maracana. It is one of the biggest stadiums in the world. It is able to admit 120 thousand people. Besides the stadium, the northern region is proud of its old royal palace, which now hosts the National Museum.

Rio is a cultural and scientific center of the country. The National Library and The National Museum of Fine Arts have more than 800 paintings of paintings and drawings collected. The streets and quays of the city literally get drowned in the lush of equatorial vegetation - evergreen giant trees, slender palm with graceful canopy, a large number of exotic flowers. Nevertheless, the city has a botanical garden and numerous parks. In the Botanical Garden, one can see more than 7000 species of plants from around the world. It also houses the famous palm trees and a collection of exotic animals and birds.

Of course, most of Rio de Janeiro is famous for the annual grand carnival, recognizable not only in the city but across Brazil and in the world. The first carnival was held in the 19th century. As in those times, today the feast before Lent begins and lasts for 5 days. The key moment of the carnival is the parade of samba schools, passing on the specially designed so-called Sambodrome. Each school develops a single topic: politics, nature, sports, arts, music - all topics must be Brazilian. Carnival in Rio de Janeiro means a beautiful wagon, lots of music, splendid costumes which people often buy for their last money, and the fiery rhythms of the samba. Carnival is traditionally watched by more than 100,000 spectators making it the brightest event of the year.
