Rome
Rome is probably the largest city in Europe according to the number of historical monuments. Rome's historic center is small enough, it occupies the place on the bank of the Tiber River in the west to the Termini station in the east. Here one finds the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter's Basilica, and Vatican.

The Roman Forum was the commercial, political and religious center of ancient Rome. Forum is crossed with the Sacred Road (Via Sacra), rising to the Capitol Hill. This delightful group of buildings includes the Temple of Vespasian from which just a few columns survived, the ruins of the Temple of Concord, the Church of St. Joseph which was established on the ruins of the prison, Curia (the residence of the Roman Senate), the place of national assemblies, the famous black stone which closes the tomb of Romulus, and the ruins of the House of Vestals. Via Sacra ends with the Arch of Titus erected to commemorate the victory of the emperor over the rebels in Jerusalem.

Tippet is the most ancient hill in Rome which is known for its grandiose imperial palaces. One of the first palaces built here was the palace of Octavian and Augustus. Later, Emperor Tiberius built the mansion here - the so-called Domus Tiberius. The underground gallery of the palace leads to the Palace of Tiberius Flavius, built in the 1st century by Domitian.

Pantheon is one of the most famous monuments of ancient Rome. It was built by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC, as evidenced by the inscription on the cornice of the portico. The name Pantheon means "dedicated to all the gods". In the Christian era, Pantheon was converted into a church which houses the remains of many famous people, including well-known Raphael.

The Colosseum is the symbol of glory of the "Eternal City". It is considered the most famous monument in Italy. Originally it was called the Flavian Amphitheater. The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world, with its height of 50 m and 50.000 seats. It was here that the spectators watched bloody shows with gladiators and wild animals.

Trevi fountain might not be the most beautiful in Rome, but without a doubt the most famous one. The fountain presents Neptune in a chariot pulled by sea horses and tritons among the rocky ledges and cascades of water. Legend has it that a traveler who throws a coin into the fountain will soon return to Rome, and the traveler who throws 2 coins will fall in love with the city.

The Spanish Steps were built to connect the Via del Babuino with Via Felice in the period from 1721 to 1725 years. It got its name from the nearby Spanish Embassy. The staircase was designed by an Italian architect Francesco de Sanctis. Spanish Steps is a favorite place for the Romans and visiting guests.

Vatican City was founded in 1929 and is the smallest country in the world. St. Peter's Cathedral is the symbol and the historical center of the Vatican City, and its huge dome towers over Rome. This cathedral is also the emblem of Rome. It was built on the foundation of the basilica of Constantine. The famous dome of the Cathedral was designed by Michelangelo. Sistine Chapel, named in honor of Pope Sixtus V, contains the most valuable and famous works in the world, for example, the famous frescoes by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Botticelli.

In Rome, there are a lot of the catacombs, but the catacombs of St. Callista survived better than others and include the Papal cave, which holds the remains of popes and the relics of various saints.
