Berlin: Where Past and Future Meet

Berlin is one of the largest cities in Europe, with the population of 3,4 million people, and probably one of the most modern and constantly renovated. Since 1990, it has been the capital of Germany, but, in fact, still consists of two cities. After the fall of the Berlin Wall it has become one of the music centers of Europe which attracts an ever-growing number of musicians and artists. With the opening of trendy restaurants and clubs, Berlin regained its reputation as the most fashionable European city.

For almost 30 years, the residents of Berlin had been separated from each other by the Berlin Wall, as the dark border between the communist east and capitalist west of the city. Currently, most of the wall is demolished, but the clinkers in the road surface can show the places where the wall ran. Fragments of the wall had been for a long time sold as souvenirs. Its remnants still stand as a reminder of the past.

In Mulenstrasse, the tourists find the famous East Side Gallery where 1200 meters of the wall are painted by artists from around the world. And in Bernauerstrasse they can see fragments of the Berlin Wall with holes cut through it at night on November 9, 1989. This is a memorable place which also retains the atmosphere of those years. The history of the Berlin Wall can be found at the Documentation Center with hundreds of photographs, documents and videos submitted there. Another noteworthy attraction is Chapel of Reconciliation, built in memory of 200 dead attempting to escape over the wall. The Berlin Wall and the attempts to move through it are the main themes in the museum at the Charlie Checkpoint which shows how ingenious East Berliners were in their attempts to escape.

Alexanderplatz, the city's main square, received its name in 1805 in honor of the visit of the Russian Tsar Alexander I. The square itself has turned into a pedestrian zone surrounded by streets. The fountain in the middle of the square is still a meeting place for young people. However, the biggest attraction is not the Alexanderplatz, but the television tower, the tallest building in Berlin. At the height of 203 m there is an observation deck, and above it - a revolving restaurant which makes a full circle every half-hour. In clear weather the visibility from the tower is about 40 km so the tourists can see much of the nearby territory.

The so-called Reichstag building, or the Parliament building of the current German government, is one of the most important sights of Berlin. After the arson attack in 1933 and the bombings in 1945, the government was forced to move to Bonn. However, since 1999 the Reichstag building has undergone a major restoration and is again the seat of parliament. The first striking element of the building is the huge glass dome on the roof. At the foot of the dome there is a cozy restaurant with stunning views over the city.

Brandenburg Gate is another symbol of Berlin. These gates are the boundary of the old city center. During the Cold War the construction of the Berlin Wall began here, and in 1989, the first East Germans crossed the border at Brandenburg Gate to get into West Germany. The gate is decorated with the sculptural group of a Greek quadriga with the goddess of victory Victoria.

One more attraction is the legendary Egyptian Museum, one of the most popular museums in Berlin. It presents a rich collection of works of art of ancient Egypt, the most famous of which is the original bust of Queen Nefertiti. Here one can also see an Egyptian sarcophagus, a mummy, and a rich collection of papyrus scrolls.
