Oslo
Norway's capital Oslo lies deep in the beautiful fjord bearing the same name, and although it is a big and modern city, nature still plays a big role. Oslo is the oldest among the capitals of the Scandinavian countries, inhabited by approximately half a million people who are considered to be very friendly and hospitable. The center of Oslo is small and cozy, and almost all the tourist attractions are within walking distance.

The city is famous as the cultural capital. Here one can find many interesting museums, unique architecture and magnificent works of art. An example is the Town Hall with its unusual turrets, the historic fortress of Akershus and the Aker Brygge promenade with its numerous terraces viewing the harbor. The Norwegian Museum of Ethnography is one of the biggest open air museums in Europe, dedicated to the peculiarities of everyday life, customs and culture of Norway. It is situated in a picturesque location and offers the visitors an interesting introspection into the life of Scandinavia. The exhibitions of the museum present regional folk costumes, folk art and the culture of indigenous people of Norway. In addition, the museum welcomes numerous dance and musical groups during the summer months. The tourists also visit an old wooden church located on the territory of the museum.

Akershus Fortress refers to the major tourist attractions in Oslo. Built in about 1300 as a fortified royal castle, it was later expanded and turned into a defensive fortress which in the 17th century became a Renaissance palace with numerous festive halls for banquets and public receptions. The Royal Palace is the mausoleum of some of Norway kings. The Palace is surrounded by a beautiful park. A part of the castle serves as a garrison, and changing of the Guard in front of the palace attracts large numbers of tourists. In summer, the castle hosts various concerts, dancing and theatrical performances.

Two years after the end of the Second World War, the Norwegian scientist Thor Heyerdahl set off into one of the most exciting journeys of the 20th century: together with five companions he used a simple wooden raft, made according to the descriptions of ancient Indian rafts, to sail from Peru across the Pacific Ocean to reach Polynesia. On August 7, 1947, the raft "Kon-Tiki" reached its destination, and the brave Norwegian proved that South American Indians could have reached Polynesia likewise. The Kon-Tiki Museum hosts the exhibition with the famous raft and the equipment from Heyerdahl's other expeditions, the statues from Easter Island, and the biggest fish in the world - a 10-meter whale shark.

Oslo's Vigeland Park is one of the most popular attractions which attracts more than a million visitors a year. The unique garden exhibits more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and wrought iron. The sculptures represent the world of human senses: sadness, joy, love and other feelings and emotions. The greatest attraction is the 17-meter high stone monolith, composed of 121 interlaced bodies. It is the largest granite sculpture in the world. Vigeland is an idyllic place with a duck pond and shady alleys.

Munch Museum in Oslo represents the collection of more than 5,000 drawings, graphic works and paintings, most of which belong to Edward Munch, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
