Yokohama
Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan though it looks like the continuation of Tokyo and is located just 30 km from the capital, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama's population is about 3.5 million people. The city was opened for international trade in 1858, and in the early 20th century it became one of the most famous port cities in Japan. Currently, Yokohama is the largest port in the country.
Looking at this thriving metropolis with lots of skyscrapers, shopping centers and parks, it is difficult to imagine that during World War II American aviation practically destroyed the whole city. The most famous district is called ??Minato Mirai. It is located in central Yokohama, and in Japanese it means "the port of the future." Here are the high-rise office buildings, luxury hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, conference halls, and exhibition centers. The district even has an amusement park with the popular Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel.
The historic center of the city is famous for Yokohama Doll Museum, Yokohama Stadium, and the Silk Center. In the district of Noge, one can see a lot of shops and bars that are frequented by the visitors from Korea, China, Thailand, and other countries, and have a solid international recognition.
Yokohama is home to other attractions, such as the Yokohama Arena admitting 17,000 people and Nissan Stadium, known as the International Stadium Yokohama. Another famous place is the Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum. Sankei-en is a typical Japanese-style garden which includes seventeen old buildings from Japan, the majority of which have been named Important National Cultural Properties.
Chinatown is one of the most famous places in Yokohama and occupies the biggest territory in Japan. This is the largest Chinese settlement in the country of the Rising Sun. In the 19th century, Chinese traders began to settle in Japan in accordance with their tastes and traditions. It resulted in this increased Chinese district with picturesque temples and colorful streets. Here one can find numerous Chinese restaurants, souvenir shops and stalls selling all kinds of Chinese goods. The main symbol of Chinatown is Kantei-byo Temple.
The famous Yamashita Koen Park is located near the Port of the Future and is one of the most visited tourist destinations. One of the attractions of the city of Yokohama is the Marine Tower, located on the coast directly next to the Yamashita Koen. The proximity to Chinatown and the fashionable shopping street Motomati as well as the view on the bay made the park the tourists' favorite destination. Motomachi is very popular among young people. It is known for an abundance of trendy boutiques and cozy cafes. Here you can find the shops of world-known companies.
Yokohama is often visited in a pair with Kamakura, one of the oldest towns in Japan and a historic landmark in Kanagawa Prefecture. The Big Buddha statue (Daibutsu) is the most famous landmark in Kamakura. Apart from this statue, there are 150 shrines and Buddhist temples, the most famous of which are Catti-ji Temple and Engaku-ji. The ancient town is surrounded on three sides by wooded mountains, which make its climate soft and welcoming. This is a perfect winter and summer resort.
The water park Hakkeijima Sea Paradise introduces marine flora and fauna. In aquariums of the aqua museum one can see about 100,000 fish, polar bears, penguins, and other animals. Special shows are organized here with the participation of trained dolphins. The visitors can even feed the dolphins and make photos with them. The teritory of Hakkeijima Sea Paradise includes numerous shops and stalls where one can buy a souvenir of this wonderful park. In the nearby restaurants one can enjoy fresh seafood and a good company of the kind-hearted local residents.
