Barcelona: the Pride of the Mediterranean

Not many Mediterranean cities can boast such a rich architectural, cultural and modernist heritage as Barcelona. It's a real ensemble of living pages of history. Near the cathedral there is the Archbishop's Palace, and near the temple the tourists can find Sant Sever - a very beautiful piece of architecture representing the Baroque period.

Sant Jaume Square is Barcelona's public, political and historical center. The main palace of the square is the Generalty Palace, the institution of self-government of Catalonia. Through a very low arched doorway, the tourists can get to the courtyard, a masterpiece of Gothic Catalan art. No less beautiful is Piazza del Rey. Here is the beautiful chapel of Santa Agenda. Under the arch, there is a spacious semi-circular staircase leading to the Royal Palace. Today, there are archives of the Crown of Aragon which contain more than 4 million documents of the Royal Office, the Royal Audience.

Near this area one finds the House of Clarian built in Gothic style and hosting the Museum of History. This museum has a vast collection of artifacts discovered in the excavation: pottery, ancient coins, drawings, paintings, and documents that give the opportunity to learn more about Barcelona's past. Mares Museum is located in a nearby building, a wing of the Royal Palace. It is worth a visit to explore the sculptural funds with a wide variety of Gothic and Romanesque art.

In the old town you can see the Palace of Moishe with its beautiful drawings on the black background, the spacious courtyard, the oldest fountain in Barcelona. This part of the city also features the magnificent Palace of Countess of Palamos which is now the Academy of Letters and the Church of Santa Maria del Mar which is the 13th century masterpiece of Catalan Gothic style. Here lived the sailors, fishermen, traders, and artisans. Small streets still retain their original structure and the spirit of the Middle Ages. The tourists can observe a large number of palaces and houses of nobility here.

The medieval Jewish quarter of Barcelona is also worth visiting. The streets are filled with shops, antiques shops, art galleries, and bookstores. It hosts exhibitions and sales of artwork.

La Rambla Street is the soul of Barcelona. The writer William Somerset Maugham once called it "the most beautiful street in the world". The street has two large fountains, works of sculpture, a number of book and flower stalls. Down this street, you can go to the sea, to the Porta de la Pau, with the monument to Christopher Columbus dominating the area. All the great artists of the last century were here, and it is here that Montserrat Caballe and Carreras Zhusep have been recognized and first admired.
