Lille
Lille is situated within an hour's drive from Paris and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in France and in Europe. In 2004, Lille received the status of the cultural capital of Europe, and it was not an accidental decision. The history of Lille is complex and dates back to the 13th century. In those difficult times, Lilly was an estate of Count Baudouin of Flanders, who was the vassal of the French king. Subsequently, a huge role in the fate of the city was played by the so-called dynastic marriages, and Lille as a kind of prize went from one king to another. Since the Middle Ages, nothing could destroy the appearance of the Flemish city. Narrow, sometimes gloomy medieval streets, Gothic facades of houses - all brings Lille back to the old days.

Nowadays, Lille is a cultural and commercial center of Europe, and France in particular. Lille has always been popular among visitors - it is a conveniently located town, linking the medieval trade routes between England, Flanders, Holland, and France. At that time, the main focus was on tapestry, but in the 19th century industry began to develop rapidly. Lille gets its second wind with the construction and opening of the tunnel that links Europe with Great Britain. Since the opening of the tunnel, Lille has been called the main station in Europe. An ultra-modern railway station made of glass and concrete proves this widespread definition. High-speed trains connect Lille with many countries in Northern Europe. The station has revived the city and there has appeared a modern center around it.

Lille is a unique combination of different eras. The modern city is in harmony with the historic city, and many of the sights represent the 19th century. It is characterized by the boulevards and squares, very much reminiscent of Paris. The center of Lille was designed in the 19th century, and is represented by the Republic Square where the famous Museum of Fine Arts is located. Despite the fact that the Museum of Fine Arts is provincial if to be compared with the largest European museums, it has an impressive collection of paintings, uniting all eras, styles, and trends. The Museum of Fine Arts exhibits paintings by famous artists such as Rubens, Titian, Botticelli, Veronese, Goya, and Delacroix. In addition to paintings, the museum houses fine collections of pottery and sculpture. Lille has unique museums of natural history and geology, aquariums and an insectarium.

Lille has a great number of souvenir shops, where tourists from different cities and countries can buy the products of local craftsmen and take away a memory of such an unusual and interesting city.

City Centre Lille is represented by the Grand Place located near the Old Market. A house where an outstanding public figure Charles De Gaulle was born is now one of the main attractions in Lille. The old part of Lille is the place of beautiful buildings. There is a historical almshouse Comtesse which was founded to assist unhappy people. Another impressive sight is known as Parisian Gate (Porte de Paris). Parisian Gate was built to commemorate the annexation of the city of Lille to France in the 17th century.

The monuments of Lille are truly numerous. It has Gothic Chapels of the 13th century, the church of Saint Catherine, and the Military Hospital. 50 kilometers away from the city you can see the bell tower of Notre-Dame-de-la-Tray, which has an impressive height even by modern standards - 105 meters. The city of Lille is a kind of time machine, which in a remarkable way combines old and modern architecture. Lille is the second largest city in France which is interesting to simple tourists and business people. Being the cultural capital of Europe, Lille daily draws thousands of tourists from all over the world.
