Stockholm
There is never a question what to see in Stockholm for this capital presents a fine selection of attractions to everyone's taste. It is a city of 14 islands connected by 53 bridges. Many tours usually start with the oldest of the islands, Riddarholmen (Knight Island). Here is the monument to the famous Swedish earl and the church which became a museum in 1807.

From the Tower Earl Birger, in the northern part of the island, one can have magnificent views of Royal Island (Kungsholmen) and the brick Town Hall. The latter is famous as the place of presenting the most popular award - the Nobel Prize.

Going over a small bridge to the neighboring island of Gamla Stan (Old Town), where many famous sights of Stockholm are located, one should not forget to pay attention to the beautiful building on the left hand, the Baroque style Knight's house of the 17th century.

The monument in front of the building is to one of the three most respected kings of Sweden, Gustav Eriksson Vasa. The place is marked by very beautiful narrow streets and old houses dating back to the 16th-18th centuries.

One of the main attractions in Stockholm is Royal Palace built in 1754. The old palace was burnt by fire in 1697, and the present, with its four lateral wings is the second largest palace in Europe after the one in Madrid. The palace is still a working residence of the king. The ceremony of changing the guard takes place every day at noon in front of the palace, and is characterized by sumptuous beauty and solemnity of the event. Those who wish to see the ritual are numerous, but if you are lucky enough, you might sneak to the front and watch another epoch come alive in front of your eyes.

From the Royal Palace one can go to the Royal Swedish Opera which was opened in 1890. Next to the theater you can see the monument to another most popular king of Sweden, Gustav II Adolf. And not far from the theater there will be the third and the last monument to king Charles XII who was notorious in Russia due to the Battle of Poltava.

Between the Old Town and the area called Normalm, there is another attraction of Stockholm - the Houses of Parliament built in 1905. Not far from the Houses of Parliament, the tourists will find Beast Island which used to be the royal hunting reserve in the distant past, but now its focus is on the most famous and interesting museums. Among them, one cannot but mention the Waldemarsudde Museum of Fine Arts, North Museum, Junibacken, magnificent Aquarium as well as Skansen and the ship - the Vasa Museum.

The last two sights of Stockholm are very interesting. Skansen is the Ethnographic Museum Park, the world's first open-air museum, founded in 1891. Walking in Skansen, we can stroll through five centuries and see almost the whole country at once. In fact, it is Sweden in miniature. Skansen is also home to the only zoo in Stockholm. Here you can see exotic and domestic animals. It would be nice to walk here at least until the evening, but one also needs to visit the museum of the heroic sunken ship.

The flagship frigate "Vasa" is equipped with weapons and loaded with ballast. This handsome three-deck ship can be seen today in the museum in all its military splendor, with 64 bronze cannons weighing about eighty tons. The ship itself represents the history of the Swedish fleet, and this unusual museum is a true landmark of Stockholm.
