Frankfurt

The first mentioning of Frankfurt-am-Main refers to the year 794. Its name is translated as the Frankish ford, and the settlement was the capital of the East Frankish kingdom. It was a recognized place of international fairs, a center of medieval politics and economy. In 1585, the famous Frankfurt Stock Exchange opened here. Since the 19th century, the city has been a major industrial center in Germany. Frankfurt today is the economic and financial heart of the state. There are more than 420 German and international credit and finance companies and banks which regularly have more than 34 industrial exhibitions and fairs that attract 1.3 million visitors.

During the Second World War the city was destroyed by 95%. However, its new residential areas with large green parks, numerous high-rise buildings, and broad avenues create a wonderful image of a truly European city. The modern appearance of Frankfurt cannot be imagined without the skyscrapers that have become a symbol of a prosperous and self-confident Germany. The skyscraper "Europaturm" (331 m) is the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe. Despite the fact that in the coming years Frankfurt is planning to construct 14 new futuristic skyscrapers, the city still has carefully preserved samples of ancient buildings, majestic churches and cathedrals.

Some of the most memorable sights of Frankfurt include the main churches, Saint Bartholomeus Cathedral, which is a Gothic temple built in the 15th century, and Saint Paul's Church. The city's Old Opera is one of the best concert halls in Germany. Another important venue of this kind is Frankfurt Opera House.

Romerberg is the center of the city. After the war, it has been carefully restored. In the center of Romerberg, there is a fountain which, according to legend, once tossed with wine. One of the most spectacular buildings is the Church Paulskirche. It became known not as a church, but as a meeting place. Paulskirche was opened in 1833. Later, it opened the door to the first elected German parliament. The church was demolished in 1944 bombings to be restored then as a memorial to the horror of war. To the east is Romerberg Cathedral (Kaiserdom). This building is one of the few which survived the Second World War. The cathedral was built in 1235 and initially served as a parish church. Its tower is a masterpiece of early Renaissance. The cathedral also houses a museum that keeps some of its treasures.

The famous City Hall consists of buildings constructed at different times and is the office of the city Mayor. Romerberg is the place for Nikolaikirche which has been part of the city since 1260. Initially, it served as a chapel for the nearby Palace Stauferpfalz. But later, at the request of the municipality, it was open to the people. One of the main attractions in Frankfurt is the house which happened to be the birthplace of the German poet Goethe. The house has been carefully restored to the smallest details, and displayed some objects belonging to the family of Goethe. Not many cities can boast as many museums as Frankfurt. Frankfurt's famous museums, located on the so-called Museumsinsel promenade, offer entertainment to every taste: from handicrafts to paintings, from the history of cinema to the ancient sculptures.

In Frankfurt, there are a lot of wonderful parks. In one of them, in the middle of the lake, the famous Holzhausen castle is located. It is interesting to visit the palm park Frankfurt Palmengarten which covers the area of ??20 hectares and represents almost all climatic zones.

Cozy pedestrian zones, shopping malls, specialty shops and bookshops, numerous cafes and bistros make visits to Frankfurt truly unforgettable.
