For most of us, Denmark is associated primarily with the famous fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen which we read in childhood. As for in-depth knowledge, not many of us are acquainted with the life of this northern country and its capital, Copenhagen. Everyone who has visited Denmark, will remain fascinated with this country for the rest of his life. Architecture, history, museums, and unique culture of Denmark will not leave anyone indifferent.
In Copenhagen, you will at once feel its magical, dreamlike atmosphere. The city has a lot of channels which can serve as an important way of seeing Copenhagen and getting to know its sights which look even more romantic than from land. Boat trips on the canals of Copenhagen may become the most valuable impression of the Danish capital. Free time can be spent differently - going to more than sixty museums located in Copenhagen. Among them one can mention the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum, the museum of wonders with a colourful name "Believe it or not" which brings together a variety of wonders from around the world, Guinness World Records Museum, and others. Connoisseurs of painting and sculpture will be attracted by the State Art Museum or Glyptothek which has the collections from Egypt, Greece and Rome, as well as Danish and French art of the 19th-20th centuries, and Thorvaldsen Museum.
The favorite pastime of tourists is to begin a walk in Copenhagen from the monument to the saddest and most tragic heroine of Hans Christian Andersen - The Little Mermaid, doomed to forever sit in the harbor on a cold and wet stone. It is also a romantic place frequented by young people in love. Fountain Gefiona is another popular tourist attraction named for the Norse goddess. According to the legend, she enchanted the Swedish king, and he promised to give her the piece of land she would manage to plow in a day. The goddess turned her four sons in bulls, waved her whip and plowed a huge territory, which became one of the Danish islands - the island of Zealand.
Some steps away from the fountain, and you are on the octagonal Amalienborg Square. It is formed by four identical small graceful palaces, facing each other. The twin buildings have their own names and are separated from the garden. This is the residence of the royal family. Here, at noon, the traditional ritual of changing the guard takes place. To the delight of the spectators, the soldiers, clad in bright red uniforms and tall fur hats, march across the square for not less than half an hour.
Very close to this place is Kristianborg Palace, the seat of Danish Parliament. The original building here arose in the 12th century, but the buildings on the site were not lucky: they have burnt several times. The palace can be entered by tourists, but only in its northern wing. Besides the parliament, the palace houses public services and the royal court, the Royal Library, and the oldest palace theater and museum Arsenal with a collection of weapons, carriages, and clothes.
Not far from the royal palace there is a round New Royal Square. Here one finds the Royal Theatre, the most luxurious stores in the city, the elegant Hotel Angleterre and the Sharlottenborg Palace. Generally, if you are fond of exhibitions, performances and festivals, visit the Danish capital where the cultural life is in full swing.
Numerous parks of Copenhagen have antique sculptures which are an attraction for many tourists. The city is fascinating, and it lures you to come and visit.
