Naples Naples had been founded by Greek colonists before our era, but retained the name given by them. Naples is translated from the Greek language as the "new city". Its population is 1.2 million, and its scenic location on the shores of the Bay of Naples makes it a special attraction for tourists. Millions of those who come to Naples also admire the view of Mount Vesuvius, the most famous active volcano in Italy. Its slopes are covered with lifeless lava fields interspersed with orchards and vineyards. Naples has a lot of narrow streets running down from the high hills to the sea. The city and its suburbs have become a real treasure for archaeologists due to the ancient cities (Pompeii, Herculaneum) buried during the eruption in 79 AD. Now they have become open-air museums. Naples is an important center of international tourism due to its mild climate and sunny weather.

Bustling Naples, the capital of Campania, is one of the most densely populated cities in Europe. Its narrow streets are constantly crowded with people who are forced to bend down under the ropes with the laundry and beware of numerous motorcycles.

Piazza del Hess Nouveau with is numerous churches, the Cathedral, the Palazzo Reale and San Carlo opera house create the historic center of Naples. Built in the 13th century, the Nouveau castle is one of the main attractions in the city. The National Archaeological Museum has a remarkable collection of Greek and Roman art and priceless treasures, discovered in Jerusalem and Pompeii.

Naples is rich in architectural monuments, but the main attraction of the region is outside the city. This is Mount Vesuvius. It is very easy to get from Naples to the mysterious city of Pompeii - a thriving resort of wealthy Romans. Vesuvius volcano ash covered it, and only about 2,000 residents had fled in time before the city was buried without a trace. It was discovered only in 1600. Ancient drawings and signs, old shops and taverns help you get an impression of life in ancient Rome. In some wealthy homes, or villas, one can see beautiful murals and frescoes. This city is often visited by children who may wander here for hours.

The city's main sights include Piazza del Municipio, a huge green square which stretches from City Hall to the city railway station. The City Hall is currently located in the palace of San Giacomo. The castle of Maschio Angioino is an important cultural center where one can see the frescoes executed in the 14th century, paintings, sculptures, and silverware. Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) was built in the 17th century and renovated in neoclassical style. The Cathedral of San Gennaro is the center of religious life in Naples. The facade was destroyed by an earthquake in 1349, but was completely rebuilt over the next century. Castle Sant 'Elmo is another symbol of the city. The fort helped control the city, protecting it from enemy attacks, especially from the sea. All historical events in Naples are associated with this castle. It witnessed many sieges and desperate battles with enemies, as well as frequent riots. Today, it hosts historical art exhibitions.

Naples is known to have a lot of churches and museums, such as the Royal Palace, the Chapel of St. Januarius (the patron saint of the city), the National Museum di San Martino, San Carlo Theatre, etc. Europe's largest wholesale trade center "Sis Nola," the resort islands of Capri and Ischia, children's recreation complex Castro Boleto, and the popular resort of Sorrento are located near Naples. By the 19th century, the nearby coast had become a traditional destination for aristocrats, and bohemians. The clean sea, mountain air, lots of hot springs and the rich culture attract many tourists to Naples.
